What Is a Coffee Valve? Why Is It Used in Coffee Packages?

That small round component you see on coffee packages isn’t just a simple decoration; it’s a critical piece of technology that preserves the coffee’s freshness. Known as a one-way coffee valve, this part is one of the most important components of modern coffee packaging.

What is a coffee valve?

A coffee valve is a one-way gas vent applied to the packaging via heat sealing. It serves two purposes: to release gas that accumulates inside the package and to prevent outside air from entering the package. Its body is made of PE or PP raw materials suitable for food contact; there are filtered types for ground coffee and unfiltered types for whole beans.

Why does coffee release gas?

Coffee beans undergo a chemical transformation at high temperatures during roasting and trap significant amounts of carbon dioxide within them. This gas is slowly released over the days and weeks following roasting. If freshly roasted coffee is immediately placed in an airtight package, the released gas accumulates inside the package; the package swells, becomes misshapen, and may even burst at the seams.

Two Poor Alternatives to Valve-Free Packaging

Producers who do not use valves are left with two options: letting the coffee rest for days before packaging to allow the gas to escape—though a significant portion of the aroma also escapes with the gas during this waiting period—or punching small holes in the package—which allows oxygen to enter and causes the coffee to go stale quickly.

A valve solves both problems at once

Thanks to the one-way valve, coffee can be packaged immediately after roasting while it’s at its freshest. When the gas pressure inside the package reaches a certain level, the valve opens and releases the excess gas; once the pressure is balanced, it closes. Under no circumstances does it allow air to enter from the outside. The result: a package that doesn’t swell, coffee that doesn’t come into contact with oxygen, and an aroma preserved throughout its shelf life.

In which packages is it used?

The coffee valve is used in packages of ground and whole bean coffee, as well as in doypack and block-bottom packaging, and in packages of fermented foods—in addition to coffee—that release gas. At Galio Valve, we offer solutions suitable for every packaging structure with our range of filtered and unfiltered valves featuring PE and PP bodies; please contact us to determine the valve type best suited for your packaging.
