What Is the Function of Valves in Olive, Cheese, and Pickle Cans?

Metal packaging is associated with durability; however, even metal cans have an invisible enemy: internal pressure. One-way valves used in cans for products such as olives, cheese, and pickles are designed specifically to solve this problem.

Fermentation does not stop

Brined olives, cheese, and pickles continue to undergo natural processes even after being filled into cans. Fermentation continues inside the package, producing gas. In a hermetically sealed metal can, this gas has nowhere to escape. As a result, pressure builds up, the can begins to bulge, and in more severe cases the lid and seam areas may deform.

What does a swollen can mean?

From a consumer’s perspective, a bulging can immediately creates distrust. It may be perceived as a sign of spoilage and therefore remain unsold. For the manufacturer, this means returns, product disposal, and potential damage to brand reputation. In addition, deformation may compromise the integrity of the packaging and create a real risk of leakage.

How does a can valve work?

A one-way valve installed on the can lid opens when the internal pressure reaches a certain level and releases excess gas in a controlled manner. Once the pressure returns to normal, the valve closes.

The key point is that the valve works only from the inside to the outside. It prevents air, moisture, and foreign substances from entering the package from the outside. In this way, the product remains protected in its brine environment while the metal can maintains its original shape.

Filtered or unfiltered?

Our filtered can valve is suitable for applications where product particles may reach the valve. For liquid-dominant products with a low risk of particles, our economical unfiltered model is an appropriate option.

Both types are manufactured in dimensions compatible with standard can lids and from materials suitable for food contact.
